Welcome to Reiki

Welcome! If you’ve ever instinctually placed your hand on a sore stomach or rubbed an aching shoulder, you already know the basics of energy healing. Human touch is naturally comforting, and Reiki simply takes that natural instinct and turns it into a focused practice.

You don't need special powers, years of meditation, or complex rituals to benefit from Reiki. This guide is designed to strip away the confusing terminology and give you exactly what you need to start practicing self-healing today.

By the end of this short guide, you will have a clear, actionable routine to help reduce stress, calm your mind, and support your body’s natural ability to heal.

Try this right now: Take a deep breath in through your nose, hold it for two seconds, and sigh it out through your mouth. Notice how your shoulders drop. You’ve just taken your first step toward relaxation!

What is Reiki? The Basics

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. The word comes from two Japanese words:

Flowing Energy Illustration

Together, Reiki translates to "universal life energy." It is the unseen energy that flows through all living things.

A Very Brief History

Reiki was developed in Japan in the early 1900s by a man named Mikao Usui. He wanted to create a simple, accessible healing system that anyone could use, regardless of their background or personal beliefs. Today, it is practiced all over the world, even in major hospitals, to help patients relax and recover.

What Reiki is NOT:

How Reiki Actually Works

Think of the energy in your body like water flowing through a garden hose. When you are healthy and relaxed, the water flows freely. When you are stressed, anxious, or unwell, the hose gets a kink in it. The water slows down or stops.

Reiki acts like someone gently un-kinking the hose.

When you place your hands on or near your body with the intention to heal, you are acting as a funnel for fresh, clean energy. This energy flows to where your body needs it most, clearing out tension and allowing your natural systems to function smoothly again.

Try this: Rub your hands together briskly for 15 seconds until they feel warm. Now, pull them about an inch apart and hold them still. Notice that faint tingling or magnetic pull between your palms? That is your Ki—your personal energy!

The Benefits of Energy Healing

Reiki is beloved because it is gentle, non-invasive, and completely safe. You cannot overdo it, and it will never cause harm. When you practice self-Reiki regularly, you may notice benefits across your mind, body, and emotions.

Physical Benefits:

Mental & Emotional Benefits:

The best part about Reiki is that it puts the power of healing back into your own hands. It gives you a practical tool you can use anytime, anywhere, for free.

Preparing for a Session

You don't need absolute silence or a perfectly decorated meditation room to practice Reiki, but creating a comfortable environment tells your brain it is time to relax.

Setting Your Space:

Mental Preparation:

Don't worry about clearing your mind completely. It’s normal to have thoughts. When a thought pops up about your grocery list or an email you need to send, simply notice it, let it go, and bring your focus back to your hands.

Grounding and Centering

Before you begin moving energy around, you need to be anchored. "Grounding" simply means bringing your awareness out of your busy thoughts and down into your physical body and the earth below you.

Grounding Roots Illustration

Being grounded prevents you from feeling spacey, dizzy, or lightheaded after a session.

Try this 60-Second Grounding Exercise:
  1. Sit with both feet flat on the floor.
  2. Close your eyes and take three slow, deep breaths.
  3. Imagine roots growing out of the bottoms of your feet, pushing through the floor, and extending deep into the warm earth.
  4. Feel how steady and supported you are. You are strong, stable, and ready to heal.

The Power of Intention

Energy follows thought. In Reiki, we use an "intention" to give the energy a job to do. Without an intention, Reiki will still help you relax, but with an intention, the session becomes a highly focused tool for your specific needs.

An intention is simply a clear, positive statement of what you want to achieve.

Examples of Simple Intentions:

How to set it: Right before you start placing your hands, state your intention in your mind clearly one time. Then, let it go. You don't need to repeat it like a chant; set it and trust the process.

Understanding Your Chakras

You can think of "chakras" as energetic intersections in your body. If energy is water in a hose, chakras are the main water valves.

7 Chakras Outline

There are seven main chakras running from the base of your spine to the top of your head. Each one corresponds to a different physical area of the body and a different emotional state.

During a self-Reiki session, we place our hands over these chakras to ensure all the "valves" are open and functioning properly.

Your Chakra Cheat Sheet

Introduction to Hand Positions

Reiki is delivered simply by placing your hands lightly on or just above your body.

Reiki Hand Positions

The Hand Shape: Keep your fingers lightly together and your hands slightly cupped (as if you are holding a small amount of water). Your hands should be relaxed, not stiff.

The Touch: You can gently rest your hands directly on your body (over your clothes is fine). If an area is sensitive or you prefer not to touch it, simply hover your hands an inch or two above the skin. It works exactly the same!

The Golden Rule: There is no strict "wrong" way to do this. The hand positions are just a roadmap. If your shoulder aches and you want to leave your hands there for your whole 10-minute practice, do it. Trust your intuition.

The Hand Position Guide

Spend roughly 2-3 minutes in each position.

Your First Self-Healing Session (Part 1)

Are you ready? Let’s put it all together. Set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes if you don't want to worry about watching the clock.

Step 1: Get Comfortable & Grounded
Sit or lie down. Close your eyes. Picture roots growing from your feet into the earth. Take three deep, slow breaths.

Step 2: Set Your Intention
State silently: "I am ready to relax and allow healing energy to flow through me for my highest good."

Step 3: Begin with the Head

Your First Self-Healing Session (Part 2)

Step 4: Move Down the Body

Step 5: Trust the Pull
If you feel a sudden urge to move your hands to your aching lower back, and ignore the "roadmap," do it. That is your intuition guiding the energy exactly where it needs to go. Stay there as long as it feels good.

Closing the Session

Once you have gone through the hand positions or your timer goes off, it is time to gently end the session. Closing properly ensures you don't feel groggy as you return to your day.

Step 1: Ground Yourself Again
Place your hands flat on your thighs or on your lower belly. Imagine any excess, buzzing energy flowing right down your legs, out through your feet, and safely back into the ground.

Step 2: Give Thanks
Take a moment to simply say "thank you" in your mind—to the energy, to the universe, or simply to yourself for taking 15 minutes to prioritize your well-being.

Step 3: Wash Your Hands
This is a wonderful physical and mental way to officially "disconnect" from the practice. Go to the sink, run cold water over your hands, and gently shake them dry. Drink a large glass of water to help flush toxins out of your muscles.

The 7-Day Beginner Practice Plan

Commit to just 10 minutes a day to build your energy-healing habit.

5-Minute "Reiki on the Go"

You won't always have a quiet room and 15 minutes to spare. When life gets stressful, you can use Reiki discreetly, wherever you are.

Reiki at the Desk Illustration

At Your Desk (For Mental Fatigue):
Rest your elbows on the desk, close your eyes, and cup your hands over your eyes. Set the intention for mental clarity. Breathe deeply for 2 minutes.

In the Car (For Stress - Parked only!):
Before starting your commute, hold the steering wheel, plant your feet firmly. Imagine grounding roots going into the car floor. Take 5 deep breaths and imagine calm energy washing over your shoulders.

Anywhere (For Anxiety):
Place one hand on your heart and one hand on your lower belly. Nobody will know you are doing Reiki; it just looks like you are comforting yourself. Focus entirely on the space between your two hands and breathe for 3 minutes.

Healing Affirmations

Affirmations are positive statements that help retrain your brain. Repeating these while practicing self-Reiki deeply absorbs the message into your subconscious. Choose one that resonates with you.

For Emotional Balance:

Try this: Pick one affirmation. Repeat it gently in your mind 3 times while holding your hands over your heart chakra.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What if I don't feel anything in my hands?

This is the most common concern! Some people feel heat, cold, or tingling, but many feel absolutely nothing at all. That is perfectly okay. Reiki flows whether you have a physical sensation or not. The biggest indicator that it is working is how relaxed you feel afterward.

Can I do it wrong?

No. As long as your intention is positive and focused on healing, you cannot make a mistake. Energy is intelligent; it will go where it is needed even if your hands are in the "wrong" spot.

What if I fall asleep?

That is a wonderful compliment to yourself! It means your body was craving rest and you successfully relaxed enough to get it. The energy still works while you sleep.

Do I need a special 'Attunement' or certification to heal myself?

Traditional Reiki teaches that you must be "attuned" by a Reiki Master to access the energy fully. However, basic energy healing is a natural human birthright. This guide teaches you how to tap into your own natural healing instincts. If you love this and want to become a certified practitioner to heal others, you can take a formal class later!

How often should I practice?

Daily is best, even if it’s just for 5 minutes. Consistency is much better than doing one long hour a week.

Can I do this on my pets?

Yes! Animals love energy healing. If your dog or cat is resting, gently place your hands on them with the intention of love and peace. If they get up and walk away, they've had enough.
